Many have said that this year has been one of the greatest years in all of film history. Well, it’s about to get a heck of a lot better. In the upcoming month, there are some absolute heaters coming to the theaters. Primetime releases September 25. Digger on October 2. The Social Reckoning on October 9. All of this just three months away from the infamous Dunesday, where Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday collide. Today we’ll break down every one of the big upcoming movies and let you know what you are getting yourself into. Without a further ado, let’s get right into it with…
Primetime
A24 is on a hot streak right now, and they are coming with some more heat in Primetime. They’ve already released movies such as Tony, Backrooms, and The Drama in 2026 alone, with Robert Pattinson starring in the latter.
Primetime goes over the career of longtime predator catcher Chris Hansen, and how his show To Catch A Predator took off.
The movie has already received a ton of controversy, especially with Hansen himself.
In an interview done with The New York Post, Hansen said, “It is an insult … I am disappointed that a Hollywood studio would take something that has accomplished so much good and twist it into something that’s evil and overly dramatic.”
Hansen has made it seem through many interviews that he was “forced” into signing his rights away for the movie, and the film was mostly fake. In an interview with Deadline, he claimed that, “obviously it’s a very dramatized version. They had told me that it’s fictionalized in many aspects.”
Hansen is making a very bold claim for someone who wasn’t exactly perfect while working on Dateline NBC. Remember, his show was canceled and NBC was sued for $105 million after a Texas prosecutor they were going after killed himself in 2008.
Robert Pattinson is coming off a career year of his own as well with The Drama and The Odyssey also premiering this year, with Dune: Part Three coming in December. In Primetime, Pattinson is supposed to be at the top of his game yet again. IndieWire said that, “Robert Pattinson is a freaky freak from frame one…”
Based on Pattinson’s recent performances, it seems he was the best suited for this role. He’s already shown this year in The Odyssey that he can play the cocky, arrogant antagonist that we can’t help but despise. It will be different though, seeing him play an anti-hero that some may root for although the character is clearly sick in the mind. Pattinson actually said that this role was something that he wanted to play, and it was molded by people watching at home as well as people close to him.
Digger
Digger starring Tom Cruise and John Goodman is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It follows Digger Rockwell, an oil-tycoon. After being told that their drilling in Greenland is causing a glacier to break off and barrel towards Europe, the president calls for Digger to save this mess.
Digger was given at least a $125 million budget, but will need $300 million just to break even.
Tom Cruise has never received an Academy Award win, although he did receive an Honorary Award last year. With the movie screening for critics recently, Cruise currently has the third best odds to win according to multiple betting services, narrowly behind John Malkovich in Wild Horse Nine and Matt Damon in The Odyssey.
As I mentioned earlier, the movie has just screened for critics all across the world. The reviews have ranged from all over the place, from critics saying, ““Digger” is not what people are expecting — and how audiences react may be the ultimate test of Tom Cruise’s star power. I respect the swing and what Alejandro González Iñárritu is going for.” (Clayton Davis) while also tweeting things like, “Digger is a mess. Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu are taking a massive swing here, but despite some great production design and a commitment to their big choices, not a whole lot works here. Cruise is good and Riz Ahmed is a highlight, but man this wasn’t enjoyable.” (Joey Magidson)
One idea that stays consistent throughout nearly every single review is this: Digger is not for everyone. It might be wacky, and satire, and even unfunny at times, but it is NOT original.
The Social Reckoning
The Social Reckoning is the sequel to the 2010 hit movie The Social Network, which followed the creation of Facebook under Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin. The Social Reckoning, on the other hand, follows Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, and Frances Haugen, a Facebook engineer, who both try and whistleblow on Facebook’s darkest secrets that Zuckerberg has been trying to hide for years.
Jeremy Strong takes over the role of Mark Zuckerberg from Jessie Eisenberg in this, and it’s said that he can’t quite fill the massive void of Eisenberg leaving. Strong has starred in The Big Short as Vinny Daniel, and in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere as John Landau.
Jeremy Allen White plays the role of Jeff Horwitz in this film, the investigative journalist who sees something missing within the depths of Facebook. Allen White has previously starred in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere as well as The Iron Claw. The other star in this movie is Mikey Madison who plays Frances Haugen, the Facebook engineer that has had enough with the company’s wrongdoings. She has previously starred in the Oscar-winning movie Anora.
While David Fincher’s original version shared many of his themes such as obsession and darkness throughout, this movie will be taking a different path. Director Aaron Sorkin focuses more on the themes of betrayal and a king-like characters downfall, as seen here with Zuckerberg falling from his “throne.”
Movie critics all over the world have been groaning since the news broke that there would be a sequel of The Social Network. It’s not that the movie won’t be good, because simply no one knows for sure yet. It’s just that the 2010 film told a complete, original story that did not need to be replicated. Even the original star and director moved on from it, which maybe was a sign that everyone should too.
To conclude, these three movies will for sure have people coming back to the movie theaters in an already stacked year. Primetime releases this Friday, Digger next Friday, and The Social Reckoning the week after that. I didn’t even mention Wild Horse Nine or La Bola Negra that are also releasing here shortly as well. So, whether you’re looking for a crazy and unsettling A24 Thriller, a classic Tom Cruise spectacle, or a revisit to one of the 2010’s best movies, the next few weeks of films offer a plethora of reasons (or excuses) to get back to the theater.
